Federal Agencies Call for AI Fairness, Equality, and Justice Compliance

The statement intends to address potential discrimination through automated systems.

The Department of Labor issued a joint statement along with the Department of Justice, Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, and Federal Trade Commission, addressing the need for fairness, equality, justice, and compliance as the use of automated systems and artificial intelligence (AI) rises.

The Department of Labor’s Office of Federal Contract Compliance Programs (OFCCP) and the Civil Rights Center (CRC) highlighted the responsibility of employers and users to ensure that the development and use of these evolving technologies align with federal law.

“The Office of Federal Contract Compliance Programs is committed to resolving discrimination and ensuring equal opportunity as tools like artificial intelligence become more commonly used,” said OFCCP Acting Director Michele Hodge. “AI is not a stand-alone solution, and human oversight and interpretation are critical to ensuring the ethical and legal application of artificial intelligence.”

Director Naomi Barry-Pérez of the CRC also pledged to safeguard workers’ civil rights amid the rapid advancements of AI and automated systems, particularly in algorithm-based hiring applications within the public workforce development system.

As the Lord Leads, Pray with Us…

  • For the heads of federal agencies to be discerning as they seek to address potential discrimination through the use of AI.
  • For wisdom for U.S. officials as they assess the benefits and risks of automated systems.
